Alpha Chemicals plans to produce commercial quantities of a selected range of ionic liquids

Supplied by: Alpha Chemicals

28/10/2009 - Alpha Chemicals has received a Commonwealth Ready Grant to finance a project, in collaboration with the School of Chemistry of the University of Sydney, to develop a method for the production of ionic liquids.

Ionic liquids as a class of chemicals are not new but there is a growing interest in new applications for these products and the range and variety has increased significantly over recent years.

Ionic liquids are possible "green solvents" as they emit very little vapour as their vapour pressure is quite low and they also assist in catalytic reactions.

Other applications of interest are in rechargeable batteries for use in energy storage in conjunction with renewable energy systems, the production of cellulose from timber and the replacement of cryolite in aluminium production to name a few.

Alpha Chemicals is planning to be able to produce commercial quantities of a selected range of ionic liquids in the next year or two. We have a facility to produce small quantities of ionic liquids for experimental purposes and would welcome enquiries.
