Aluminium load crushes worker to death at Newcastle

24/09/2012 - A worker has been crushed to death after an aluminium load fell on him at Newcastle port.

The 50-year-old man was working on board a Chinese vessel docked at Carrington on Sunday night, police said.

As the ship was being loaded with a cargo of aluminium ingots by crane, a 20 tonne pallet unexpectedly shifted and crushed the man about 9.30pm (AEST).

Paramedics were called to the scene but they couldn't revive him, said police, who attended and established a crime scene.

They will prepare a report for the coroner outlining the full circumstances surrounding the man's death.
