Asbestos find causes closure of SA parliament chamber

19/06/2012 - The lower house chamber of the South Australian Parliament has been closed after traces of asbestos were found.

Estimates Committee meetings this week are likely to be moved to another part of Parliament House after paint on the 1880s canvas awning and dust on the ceiling tested positive for asbestos.

House of Assembly clerk Malcolm Lehman says the risk to parliamentarians is believed to be low.

"Certainly, that's our hope," he said on Monday.

But the chamber will remain closed as a precaution while more tests are done and a plan is devised to remove the awning - if that needs to be done.

Lehman says some more samples are expected to be taken for testing on Monday.

The chamber is likely to remain closed until it is deemed safe.
