The order, signed with Cargotec Corporation, will deliver the straddle carriers around the end of 2013 and early 2014 and is part of Asciano's $348 million investment to redevelop and expand its container terminal at Port Botany.
The 44 AutoStrads will operate unmanned, using radar and laser guidance technology to navigate the straddles around the port terminal yard.
They will move and stack containers from the quay line into the holding yards, on to vehicles and back to the quay cranes with an accuracy of better than two centimetres, Asciano said in a statement on Monday.
