CSG water guidelines likely to please Qld landowners

03/08/2012 - Queensland landowners are likely to welcome new guidelines on the management of coal seam gas (CSG) waste water and brine.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps says firms currently store and treat waste water and brine produced from CSG extraction on site.

"It is inefficient and costly," he said in a statement.

Proposed amendments to the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 would make it possible to establish a central off-site water processing facility for CSG firms.

Companies would still require an environmental approval and a water licence to transport water and brine off their lease.

Compensation for landholders would also be covered under the guidelines.

The Minister is correct to make these amendments. It is logical to have a central processing facility as the means exist for safe transport of these by-products. There are companies in Australia who manufacture tanks that are suitable for the transport of CSG water & brine and once these amendments are approved can help CSG companies improve their efficiencies.
