Carbon tax to cost Qld $150 million next year: treasurer

01/06/2012 - The carbon tax will cost Queensland $148 million next financial year, Treasurer Tim Nicholls says.

That figure would rise to almost $200 million by 2015/16.

Nicholls on Thursday told parliament the Queensland government-owned energy providers Stanwell and CS Energy will be forced to pay a total cost of $389 million and $225 million without compensation from the federal government. He did not specify a time period.

Nicholls said Queensland Treasury modelling had also found gross state product could take a hit of up to $9.6 billion, up to 21,000 jobs could be lost and real wages could be reduced by $2900 by 2020.

"This tax will have a more pronounced effect in Queensland than any other state in Australia," Nicholls said.

"This toxic carbon tax will harm Queensland's economic growth, reduce standards of living for everyday Queenslanders, increase electricity prices and significantly harm our state budget."

The carbon tax comes into effect on July 1.
