Fair Work Aust's industrial system 'flawed': opposition

31/07/2012 - Fair Work Australia's decision to put in place a code of conduct for tribunal members and set decision-making timeframes shows the industrial system is flawed, the federal opposition says.

FWA president Justice Iain Ross has released a code of conduct to ensure tribunal members are impartial and non-political.

He also plans to put in place time-based benchmarks for the finalisation of applications to FWA.

Opposition workplace spokesman Eric Abetz said this showed that the system, designed by Julia Gillard when she was workplace minister, was flawed.

He said the changes would not address the fact that FWA's investigative arm took three years to probe the Health Services Union and its former boss Craig Thomson.

Senator Abetz said the system also had inadequate penalties for workplace law breaches.

"The only way to repair the brand damage incurred by Fair Work Australia and to stop the union boss gravy train is to implement the coalition's policy," Senator Abetz said in a statement on Monday.
