Firm gets $243k grant to install energy efficient machines

05/09/2012 - North Bayswater company Advatek has been awarded a $243,000 grant from the federal government's $1 billion Clean Technology Investment Program to install two energy efficient machines that will reduce carbon emissions intensity by more than 22 per cent.

"This grant will help the company transform its operations, cut carbon pollution and save on power bills," Mark Dreyfus, Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Innovation, said.

Advatek employs 13 people and has been based in North Bayswater since the mid-1990s.

It makes high-end, detailed components that require extreme accuracy and high precision machining for the medical, aerospace, communications and defence industries. One of Advatek's latest projects is to produce the intricate chassis components for Cochlear's ear implant devices.

"The new equipment will replace six older machines, significantly cutting power consumption with shorter, more efficient machining time, and reducing compressed air usage," Mike Symon, Federal Member for Deakin, said.

"The Clean Technology Investment Programs, funded by carbon price revenue, are about providing practical assistance to help businesses become more energy efficient, increase productivity with machinery upgrades and become more competitive," Dreyfus said.

"The grant funding is on a 1:1 ratio — Advatek will match the $243,000 grant with its own money.

It's a great example of a local company using support from the Australian Government to help secure its future."

There are three industry grant programs now open for business: the $800 million Clean Technology Investment Program, the $200 million Clean Technology Food and Foundries Investment Program and the $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Program.

"They provide opportunities for Australian businesses to find innovative ways of reducing dangerous carbon pollution and I encourage more local manufacturers to apply for support," Symon said.
