Goodman Fiedler closes 3 bakeries: 115 jobs to be axed

26/06/2012 - Breads and spreads supplier Goodman Fielder says 115 jobs will be cut from its Australian baking business as as a result of the closure of three bakeries.

Goodman Fielder said on Monday that its Townsville bakery would be upgraded to service customers in the north Queensland region.

Consequently, the bakery at Rockhampton would be closed on July 20 and the Cairns facility would be shut in the third quarter of the financial year ending June 30, 2013.

The bakery at Whiteside in Melbourne would be closed in the second quarter of the 2012/13 financial year.

"It is expected that 115 roles will be removed from the baking division as a result of the consolidation of the three bakery facilities," Goodman Fielder said in a statement.

"This brings the total number of roles removed across the company to 541 this financial year."

The changes to the Australian baking business are part of a program to reduce the company's costs and improve the manufacturing and supply chain.

Goodman Fielder also said it was simplifying its bakery range to improve efficiency, improve on-shelf availability and increase consumer satisfaction.

Plans had already been implemented to reduce the current range of 450 products to about 350, and a further 50 products were expected to be cut.
