Govt has 'sleeves rolled up' to boost productivity: Swan
20/06/2012 - Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan has told a business gathering the government has its "sleeves rolled up" to boost Australia's productivity growth.

Addressing a Business Council of Australia meeting in Parliament House on Tuesday, Swan said last week's economic forum in Brisbane agreed that productivity growth needed to focus on skills, education and cutting red tape.
He told the council representing the country's top 100 company bosses Australia was already in the top dozen economies in the world in terms of labour productivity levels.
"But we all agree that further boosting our competitiveness is essential to locking in our success in the Asian Century," he said.
He said there was a "screaming agreement" that Australia has to be a high-skilled, high-technology economy if it is going to make the most of its opportunities.
Swan said while not too much can be read into the latest quarterly productivity numbers, it was encouraging in the March quarter national accounts that productivity grew 2.3 per cent in the quarter, and a "pretty respectable" 5.3 per cent through the year.
He said it takes time to achieve sustainable long term growth in productivity, which is why the government has been so focused on delivering important investments in skills, training and infrastructure and why it is focussed on the "tough, gritty reforms" to cut red tape.
"We've come a long way but it's pretty clear we've got to keep our sleeves rolled up because there is more to do," Swan said.

I know, Wayne, why don't you introduce a Carbon Dioxide Tax (you know the very same one you said you would not)
That should realy help business, help them go out the back door.
Just go away and call an election.

You need to roll your sleeves up and dig your grave swanny - thats what the more to do is. You've already killed yourself and the labor party - just wait until the next election.

The only reason that wayne would have his sleeveS rolled up is to take our money from the "other" end.

The only thing the Treasurer has gotten right with his analogy of 'rolling up the sleeves' is the inference of bloody hard work. However, the reality is definately the opposite - this government doesn't get the notion that productivity isn't just splashing money at a range of issues that funnily enough happens to support those with vested interests - but in the hard yards of labour & financial reforms. Introducing whole new taxes and then in some illogical approach to hand money back to low & middle income earners misses the point by a bloddy mile!! If you keep on socking it to those who generate our wealth - the so-called millionaires/billionaires that this government makes a sport out of pilloring, then its only a matter of time when they look ofr opportunities elsewhere - where they will be 'appreciated'. We don't celebrate success in this country unless it's some sort of sporting endeavour - why??1 It may be tough for all of us to have to change our mindset and understand that we are not entitled to a largesse from someone else's success. That may be tough but that's the reality - the notion that we can all live our priveledged lifestyle and be entitled to the wealth generated not from working smarter and harder - productivity - but by taking from those who risked their shirts is ultimately unsustainable and delusional. Swan says they are working to improve productivity, unfortuantely there will be some pain in the reality of productivity achievement. That's called hard work. Stop kidding us and feeding us with BS! A real productive economy is one where the economic pie is increasing due to improved inputs, NOT one where some make the dough and have it extracted from them for distribution on some egalitarian notion. This governement has neither the testical and intestinal fortitude to takeon the big job, and for me the sadness is I'm not convinced the other side has the fortitude either......

Well said Mike. Swan would nor know the meaning of hard work. All he wants to do is tax and spread the Tall Poppy syndrome and spin lies. Destroying those in small business who have taken the risk and are employing people, by red tape, increased taxes and regulations.
