Govt unveils 50-year freight infrastructure plan for Qld

11/07/2012 - The federal government has released a 50-year plan for building and managing freight infrastructure across a 1000-kilometre corridor in Queensland.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Zone (MITEZ) blueprint, released on Tuesday, would boost economic activity across north Queensland.

The plan identifies the area's existing transport infrastructure, and identifies what is needed to improve freight efficiency.

Albanese said the government would spend $1.7 million on appointing a supply chain co-ordinator for the region.

Federal MP Bob Katter, whose sprawling Kennedy electorate covers most of the identified economic zone, said the plan highlighted the importance of the region to Australia's wealth.

"Closer examination of private infrastructure investment and regulatory reform, as well as the Port of Townsville vessel access and shipping cost structures, will build on the excellent groundwork by MITEZ," Katter said.
