How well would you be prepared for a livestock standstill?

It is estimated that the United Kingdom could have reduced their devastating 2001 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease by 30-50 per cent if they had implemented a national livestock standstill earlier.

Under a standstill, livestock vulnerable to foot-and-mouth disease – including cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs and goats – may not be transported from the time the standstill is declared until it finishes.

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) is working with industry to enhance preparedness for a livestock standstill as part of a national program called Exercise Odysseus.
