Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG), in which Leighton has a 45 per cent stake, will build a battery-operated tram system designed to move students around Doha Education City.
It will be the first operating rail transport system in the oil-rich Gulf nation, which is on an infrastructure drive as it prepares to host the FIFA (Soccer) World Cup in 2022.
HLG will design and construct track work, tram stops, and a depot to house administrative and maintenance units.
The contract is worth $US124 million ($A119.01 million).
HLG chief executive Laurie Voyer said he was hopeful there would be more contracts his firm would secure in the next decade in "one of the world's largest rail markets".
"Qatar is a key market for us," Voyer said.
"By successfully delivering this project, we will place ourselves in an ideal position to secure additional work as part of the Doha Metro."
