NBN Co speeds up construction with $183m in contracts

20/06/2012 - NBN Co has awarded two contracts worth a total of $183 million.

Leighton Holdings' unit Visionstream has been awarded a contract with an estimated value of $102 million for the design and construction of broadband fibre in new developments in Victoria and Queensland.

Service Stream, a stock exchange listed company, has been awarded a contract with an estimated value of $81 million for contracted works in NSW, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

NBN Co said it structured the contracts to help accelerate construction across the different rollout segments on greenfield sites.

These included the construction of the local network through the streets in new estates, development of local fibre nodes to which services will be connected, and construction of the major links between new developments and the rest of the network.

NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley said the changes were designed to more closely align the greenfields rollout with construction processes in the remainder of the rollout to existing premises.
