Nestle and Amcor to speak at AIP Technical dinner

03/07/2012 - The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) Victorian Branch, in conjunction with Appita, will be holding a technical dinner on Wednesday the 1st of August at the Box Hill Golf Club with speakers from Nestlé Australia and Amcor Australasia.

Paul Haberland FAIP, Packaging Specialist – Oceania, Nestlé Australia Ltd will be presenting a paper on "Ensuring the Safety of Food Packaging". Haberland will discuss how the process of determining new packaging has been one of ensuring the functionality, cost and environmental compliance. There is now a new requirement and it is "Safety and Legal compliance".

Major food manufacturers have developed systems of ensuring compliance which relies on good cooperation from packaging manufacturers in divulging some key ingredients and this does not always occur. Haberland's presentation will cover Nestlé’s experiences in this endeavour.

Jim Selway, Senior Technical Support Manager, Amcor Australasia will be discussing "Transport Simulations for Australian Roads". The vibration/shock spectrum that occurs during transportation in vehicles is complex and plays a significant role in the level of damage experienced by products when shipped. Advances in vibration related technologies and reduced product design cycles have increased the demand for the simulation of shocks vibration during transportation in a range of distribution channels in order to assess potential damage to product and packaging.

Selway's presentation will explore and discuss development of road transport tests which simulate Australian road conditions and the use of accelerated transport simulations in assisting packaging engineers in optimising packaging performance and cost. Vibration intensities observed in Australian roads are compared with those reported in other parts of the worlds. An overview of ASTM, ISTA and ISO vibration test methods will also be included along with some case studies.
