New Syd airport will ease inner-west noise issue: mayor

30/05/2012 - Sydney needs a new airport to ease the growing noise problem in the city's inner west, which is already subject to almost double the agreed amount of air traffic, Leichhardt mayor Rochelle Porteous says.

Leichhardt Council on Tuesday released a report responding to a federal government study about the feasibility of constructing a second airport for Sydney.

The report cites proposals to add to the existing airport at Mascot, including extending the domestic terminal, building a new hotel and expanding facilities for aircraft and car parking.

Porteous said enlarging the airport would lead to even more flights passing over the Leichhardt area.

"This is only set to get a lot worse if the Sydney Airport expansion plans go ahead," she said.

"We are currently experiencing an average of 148 aircraft movements a day, and this is projected to grow to up to 300 a day by 2020."

Under noise-sharing arrangements with Sydney Airport, the Leichhardt area should experience a total of 17 per cent of aircraft traffic, but in reality it cops almost double that amount at 28 per cent, the report says.

The NSW and federal government's Joint Study on Aviation Capacity in the Sydney Region recommended investing in a second Sydney airport within five years, identifying Badgerys Creek and Wilton as the best options.

When released in March federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese ruled in favour of Wilton, 80km southwest of Sydney.

"Council wants to see the federal government expedite the construction of a new airport for the Sydney region and no expansion of Sydney Airport," she said.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has rejected proposals for a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek or Wilton.

He wants Canberra Airport expanded, with a high-speed rail link between Sydney and the nation's capital.
