20/05/2008 - One of the largest member-owned power companies in the north-eastern United States recently established an Ethernet network that extended to the substation level. The network was put into place with the goal of gathering real-time power metering data from its group of substations. The company needed to Ethernet-enable an installed base of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) equipment and digital meters

Digi® technology provided an ideal solution for this power company. Each meter connects to a router at the substation. In turn, the AMR receivers and digital meters are connected to a Digi® solution, instantly makes them available for readings over the Ethernet. Since their Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system would eventually be moved to the Ethernet as well, the customer requested a solution that would also support relays, power quality devices, circuit breakers, transformers and other intelligent electronic devices.

Network-enable existing serial devices and provide for system updates with a future-proof design.
