Giant B triple trucks set to traverse Victoria, under plan

29/08/2008 - Giant B triple trucks would travel to every corner of Victoria, under a secret heavy vehicle network leaked to the state opposition.

The Victorian government has plotted seven major B triple routes that will span Victoria from Melbourne to Colac, Nhill and Hayward in Western Victoria, Mildura, Cobram and Wodonga in the north, and Sale in the east.

The plan is contained in secret Department of Transport documents leaked to the opposition and revealed on Thursday.

The opposition believes the B triple truck plan will be contained in the government's transport strategy due in November and has lambasted the government for not consulting with Victorians.

"In December 2007 minister (Tim) Pallas promised full consultation with local communities and councils about B triples," opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said.

"John Brumby should tell minister Pallas to pick up the phone and start making calls instead of treating local communities and councils like mushrooms."

B triple trucks, a prime mover towing three trailers, can weigh up to 82 tonnes and are up to 36 metres long.

Comment was being sought from the Victorian government.
