New Driver Safety Technology To Be Featured At The 2008 Mine HaulProvided by:FleetSafe 17/03/2008 - At the mining industry’s most established and respected haulage event, Mine Haul 2008, new safety initiatives are on the agenda, including training & fatigue issues. New to the conference is “Exception Based Monitoring”, an innovative driver safety technology that will be featured in a presentation by FleetSafe Account Manager, Jeff Seater. Exception Based Monitoring systems focus on the driver and incorporate a corrective and preventative approach. The technology generally consists of a small video event recorder mounted behind the rearview mirror. Driving behaviours such as hard braking and swerving, cause the recorder to save critical seconds of footage before and after an incident. Events are downloaded wirelessly and reviewed by specially trained analysts located at a review centre, who make recommendations for specific driver coaching. The footage of the incident and accompanying analysis is forwarded to company managers, enabling them to provide drivers with appropriate feedback and coaching, ensuring long term improvements in driver behaviour. This technology differs from standard CCTV, video or data recording systems that generate large amounts of data, but require constant viewing to derive information of value. Exception based systems only record when a “trigger” event takes place. This reduces the amount of data generated, while at the same time increasing the amount of quality information provided to the client. According to FleetSafe Managing Director, David Quayle, “The results of exception based monitoring systems speak for themselves. Clients have reduced vehicle collision rates by between 30 and 90 percent. As a result, insurance premiums and vehicle maintenance costs are significantly lowered, and drivers and organisations receive greater protection against fraudulent claims. However, the most important advantage of these systems is simply that they save lives.” The annual Mine Haul event is an established industry forum that provides the mining community with the platform to help their organisations drive down costs, increase efficiency and maximise profitability. Key networking forums will explore topics such as surface mining, road design and maintenance, automation and maximising tyre lifecycle, Fortescue Metals Group, with presentations and case studies from organisations including Rio Tinto Iron Ore, OTRACO, Newmont, Dupont, and CSIRO (Queensland Centre for Advanced Technology). Mine Haul 2008 is on March 26 to 28 at the Novotel Langley, Perth. For more information, visit www.iir.com.au/minehaul News Articles
