SA: Centre launched to help the manufacturing industry

19/08/2008 - A manufacturing centre has been opened in Adelaide to help South Australian manufacturers become more productive and competitive.

Federal Industry Minister Kim Carr on Monday said the Mawson Lakes facility, in Adelaide's northern suburbs, fulfilled a $20 million commitment from the Labor government.

It was also part of a wider promise to spend $250 million to establish six such manufacturing centres around the country, helping more than 1,000 firms.

"The Mawson Lakes centre continues the Australian government's commitment to SA and would link companies to resources in the regions and nationally, forming networks to build a permanent and readily accessible national knowledge bank," Senator Carr said.

"Government has a responsibility to help businesses grow and prosper.

"This centre will support companies by providing prototyping and testing facilities so the path between concept and application is shortened.

"It also will help companies cut through red tape to get to other government programs and act as a gateway to Australia's integration infrastructure in universities, public research organisations and the rest of the private sector."

Senator Carr said the Mawson Lakes centre would also provide business reviews, conducted by expert advisers.

"Advisers will work with firms to develop a thorough view of strengths and weaknesses, strategic business issues, potential areas for business improvement and potential areas for growth," he said.
