Telstra will make wholesale staff 12.5 pct pay rise offer

26/08/2008 - Telstra on Monday will offer its wholesale division staff a 12.5 per cent pay rise over three years, with the option for annual performance bonuses of up to 7.5 per cent.

The company walked away from union negotiations in July after two months of talks.

There are about 750 employees in Telstra's wholesale division, with more than half on individual contracts.

Wholesale group managing director Kate McKenzie said Monday's offer would be as a collective agreement available to the remaining wholesale staff, who will be able to vote on whether to accept it.

McKenzie said Telstra would also provide staff with lawyers able to give them free, independent advice on the agreement.

"They have the option of getting free, independent legal advice," she told reporters.

"It's an independent bunch of lawyers that Telstra has arranged ... they are experts in the field and will give independent help with interpretations of the clauses of the offer."

McKenzie said the offer would also contain new options for salary packaging items such as child care, vehicles and school fees, while preserving current leave and shift penalty entitlements.

These were things staff had expressed interest in during consultations over recent weeks, McKenzie said.

The current collective agreement for the division expires next month.

McKenzie said this was not the first time Telstra had negotiated directly with staff.

She said she believed it was a "very democratic process".

"It gives all the staff a say."
