Innovative safety for press brakes - New camera-based protection and measuring system from Pilz
The new, camera-based protection and measuring system PSENvip from Pilz uses an innovative optical system to monitor the whole bending process. Instead of a laser light source PSENvip uses an LED-based solution, whereby the receiver simply needs to be illuminated along the upper tool. So the time it takes for initial and subsequent adjustment of the system is reduced to a minimum.
When installed on the upper die of the press brake, the PSENvip detects even the smallest foreign body in the protected field between the transmitter and receiver, enabling productive work practices in complete safety.
PSENvip also records relevant control data from the bending process: not only is the metal sheet detected, but the bending angle is determined automatically and visualised via the integrated display. A separate angle measurement device is not needed, simplifying operation and reducing costs.
With its innovative optical system "parallel vision", the PSENvip protection and measuring system is completely insensitive to optical influences such as surface reflections, reflection bypass, external light or diffused light.
Thanks to the high optical resolution PSENvip safely detects the smallest of objects, down to two millimetres. A reaction time of three milliseconds ensures a fastest possible shutdown in the case of danger. The protected fields are flexible to adapt for "box bending" or "back gauge" operating mode.
The innovation is apparent in PSENvip's optical properties. Previous mobile protection systems have been based on a laser light source, which emitted a bundled light beam (coherent light).
This almost parallel beam needs to be aligned with the upper tool when first commissioned. With the new LED-based solution using PSENvip, the receiver simply needs to be "illuminated" along the upper tool. So the time it takes for initial and subsequent adjustment of the system, to change a tool for example, is reduced to a minimum.
Using an LED-based transmitter provides additional benefits. Quite apart from the simple receiver alignment with the upper tool, LED-based transmitter light presents no risk to the operator, unlike laser-based systems. What's more, the service life of an LED is substantially longer than that of a laser.
The camera-based receiver is key to the efficiency of the overall system; here too, Pilz has an innovative, technically reliable solution. Pilz's own camera chip contains special security mechanisms and, with 1000 images/second, enables the safety-relevant zone beneath the upper tool to be scanned over a wide area and, above all, quickly.
Thanks to the LED-based transmitter and the software tolerance within the receiver, the protection and measuring system is completely insensitive to vibration and operates reliably up to a distance of ten metres between transmitter and receiver.
The membrane keypad and LCD display on the receiver enable the system to be operated and diagnosed with ease. The operator receives information on the protected field as well as system messages, and has a complete overview of the adjustment image. Simple troubleshooting and the system's tolerance make operation simpler and guarantee high availability of the mobile protection system.
Complete solution with safe control technology
PSENvip can be used in conjunction with PSS programmable safety and control systems or the multifunctional safety system PNOZmulti. The way in which the press brake is installed and incorporated into the overall system is simple, fast and user-friendly. The connections on the transmitter and receiver housing are not made via terminals but quickly and easily via M12 connectors.
