Granowski have just completed a machine destined for Iceland, to process spent carbon blocks in readiness for the recycling of carbon, which is then made into new carbon blocks for the cycle to begin again.
W Granowski Pty Ltd were given strict specifications with regard to removal of carbon, whilst removing the majority of cryolite on the carbon block.
The residual shot remaining on the car- bon block once it is passed out of the machine is also strictly controlled. The manufacture of aluminium begins with small red pebbles called bauxite, which in turn is refined into alumina by an electrical process to become the fine, white powder that is heated to almost 1000 deg C to make molten aluminium.
4 tonnes bauxite = 2 tonnes alumina = 1 tonne aluminium.
Aluminium is made inside large furnaces called 'pots'. Alumina is fed into the pots and dissolved in molten cryolite. Electricity passing through the solution sepa- rates the aluminium which sinks to the bottom, and during this process the car- bon block erodes and is contaminated with cryolite, which must be removed in order to recycle the valuable commodity carbon.
This is where the Granowski butt blaster plays a vital role. The carbon blocks, known as 'butts' are attached to long aluminium anode rods which pass the electricity through the carbon blocks to melt the cryolite. The whole assembly, rod and contaminated butt, pass through a shot blast ma- chine by means of an over- head power and free conveyor, and spin in front of three airless abrasive impeller wheels giving two revolutions, which is sufficient to remove the cryolite and dross from the diminished carbon block.
