Counting scales are specifically used to count small pieces and to totalise them. They are ideal for packaging by quantity rather than weight. Counting scales can also be used as a standard weighing scale.
The majority of scales sold these days do have an inbuilt counting feature, making most scales a counting scale. This feature is satisfactory for general purpose counting, but these scales tend not to have the internal accuracy required for professional counting. This feature is simply a handy addition to the scale's overal capabilities.
Counting scales are scales purpose-built to count pieces. They have a high internal resolution, making them ideal for counting pieces. Counting scales tend to be slightly more expensive than general purppose scales because of the higher internal resolution of the scale, but the improved accuracy is worth the little extra, as you can be sure you are not giving away additional product.
Note that the internal resolution is not equivalent to the displayed resolution. Often the displayed resolution will only be about 1/3,000 to 1/5,000 of the overall capacity. The internal resoltuion is what makes a counting scale more specialised for counting than a general-purpose scale and will typically be 1/100,000 to 1/500,000 of capacity.
Counting scales can also totalise several piece counts to give an overall total of pieces. Changing from one type of piece to another is also very easy and quick. A tare facility also easily negates the weight of containers and packaging.
