Recall issued for US yeast following salmonella outbreak

28/05/2012 - Australians who may have purchased two yeast products online from the US have been warned of a recall following a salmonella outbreak.

The products, Tempeh Starter Yeast and Super Starter Yeast, have been linked to reported cases of salmonella in the US.

The two products which contain tempeh, a fermented bean product, have been recalled in the US.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) said the products were distributed internationally by a US-based company, IndonesiaFoodMart.com, including to Australia.

The products were sold in sealed clear plastic packages, with a small computer printed label, in 30 grams, 50g, 250g and 1kg portions.

All batches and sizes of the products have been recalled.

FSANZ advised anyone who may have purchased the products to discard them immediately.

People who may have consumed the products should seek medical advice.

Salmonella infection is a serious illness, especially in children and the elderly.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
