Did you know that under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) (WHS Act) a PCBU or business owner must ensure as far as reasonably practicable the health and safety of their workers while they are at work. The definition of worker has been broadened to include persons that carry out work in any capacity for a PCBU. This extends the WHS Act coverage beyond the traditional employee/employer relationship to include new and evolving work arrangements and risks. Refer to section 7 of the WHS Act for the definition of worker.
Prevention is the best form of protection. PCBUs need to establish health and safety policies and associated procedures to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.
The potential for serious injury or illness from slips and trips cannot be overestimated. Such incidents can have severe consequences and long-term effects.
Workers’ compensation may only represent a proportion of the costs associated with an injury or illness. It does not account for the other costs such as:
- The time to process and manage the injury
- Increased workloads for other workers
- Loss of expertise and necessary skills
- Additional training needed for replacement staff
- Decreased productivity
- The human aspect of pain and suffering
By frequent use of a simple and inexpensive floor scrubber, these type of issues can be well avoided.
