Structural Glazing Tape (SGT) – A new bonding alternative
25/11/2008 - An alternative to structural silicone sealants
New to Australia, 3M™ VHB™ Structural Glazing Tape is a high performance bonding material used to attach glass to structural glazing frames, replacing structural silicone sealants. This clean-line fixing method offers improved aesthetics and design flexibility. Unlike silicone, SGT requires no cure time, enabling the glazed units to be completed and installed on site within hours.
Recent performance tests to the industry glazing standard AS4284:2008 were conducted by CSIRO and reviewed by Connell Wagner, Façade Systems. 3M Structural Glazing Tape performed to 4 times the design load, demonstrating the ability to withstand extreme deflection within a typical curtainwall system.
SGT has been used in projects globally for over 18 years and has the potential in Australia to redefine the building and construction industry. Projects such as the Hyperdome and the National Portrait Gallery in ACT have already demonstrated the benefits of this new technology.
