The new RSS 36 Series safety sensor

The SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 is the perfect platform to present the next step in the development: the RSS 36 electronic safety sensor.

The Schmersal RSS 36 series is an electronic safety non-contact sensor that provides the highest level of safety (CAT 4, SIL 3, PL e). It provides up to 10mm sensing distance for applications such as gate or hatch monitoring and position control and protection.

Up to 31 RSS 36 safety sensors can be wired in series to CAT 4, SIL 3, PLe. In addition to that, different variants are available with unique coding. This is enabled by the integration of RFID technology in the safety sensor.

The basic version of the sensor responds to any suitable target. A second version only accepts the target, which was taught during the first start-up. In the third version, the teach-in process can be repeated any number of times. In this way, the user can choose the best suitable coding variant, thus determining the level of the tampering protection as well. This is enabled by the integration of the RFID technology in the safety sensor.

The Schmersal RSS 36 safety sensor has universal mounting possibilities. Optionally, an integrated magnetic latching is available, which enables using the sensor as end stop when fitted on smaller safety guards. The high switching distance provides for additional degrees of freedom for the sensor and actuator assembly.

The materials used for the enclosure have ECOLAB certifications and are resistant to aggressive cleaning agents. It offers a protection class IP 69K therefore is designed for use in areas with the harshest environments that have steam jet or high-pressure cleaners in use.
