12/07/2007 - Ultrahawke - the nation’s oldest manufacturer of weighbridges and heavy duty scales recently celebrated its 150th anniversary with the opening of new premises in Melbourne’s Campbellfield. Mayor of Hume City, Cr Gary Jungwirth, was only too willing to attend and perform the official opening duties.
This rare Australian event was attended by many well known scale industry identities from across Australia, various high profile staff from the National Measurement Institute and Weight & Measures departments, retired scale people, customers, suppliers and staff of Ultrahawke.
Company Chief Executive Officer Brenton Cunningham said one of the secrets of Ultrahawks business success was the “incredible dedication” of the loyal staff, many of whom had spent their working lives at the firm. “We have moved with the times and embraced new technologies, but without our people, we couldn’t deliver our world-class product,” Mr Cunningham said.
One of the scale industries most respected identities, Ultrahawk's Sales Manager, Mr Ken Williams, was awarded a gold watch in recognition of notching up 30 years of outstanding serivce to Ultrahawke and the Australian weighing industry.
From the strong direction provided by Ultrahawk's long serving General Manager, Mr Dennis Woodward, the company supplies heavy duty scales and weighbridges to many industries such as waste management and recycling and meets an ever-increasing road safety requirement for using weighbridges for detecting overload vehicles for Australia’s various Main Roads Authorities.
Ultrahawke is widly regarded as Australia’s most prestigious manufacturer of weighbridges and heavy capacity scales and 150 years is no mean feat for a small business that started operating in 1857 as Hawke & Co in Kupunda, South Australia. A contract after the First World War to supply SA Railways entrenched Hawke as Australia’s premier supplier of locally made scales and weighbridges, a title that still holds true today. In 1983, the weighbridge division of Hawke & Co merged with Ultra Scales to become Ultrahawke - which is owned by Salter Australia Holdings – Australia and New Zealand’s biggest industrial weighing and packaging group.
