Lighting products can be exposed to a whole host of pollutants which can manifest itself often in “cheap” aluminium and steel products as galvanic and atmospheric corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion is characteristically made up of particles of sulphur, carbon compounds and nitrogen (fuel combustion), chlorides (pools), sulphates & metal oxides, becoming extremely corrosive when combined with oxygen, water and or high humidity.

Galvanic corrosion is caused by an electrolytic action, typified when naturally occurring low electrical current (telluric currents/voltage) and the presence of moisture are combined with Aluminium (housing) and Stainless Steel (trim, screws or fasteners). Coastal regions with sea spray, mist and high humidity are more susceptible to corrosion due to Sodium chloride (salt/saline) contained in coastal atmosphere which attacks metals and paint finishes.
Copper is an excellent electrical conductor therefore copper content in Aluminium especially when in direct contact with the ground should be “copper free”.

A telluric current (from Latin tellus, “earth”) is an electrical current which moves underground or through the sea. Telluric currents result from both natural causes and human activity. The currents are extremely low frequency and travel over large areas at or near the surface of the Earth.

Water is a very poor “conductor” of electricity however seawater’s electrical conductivity is much higher than fresh water due to the concentration of Ions. Every litre of seawater has approximately 35 grams of dissolved salts. Fresh water has sufficient ion concentrations to be conductive and it’s the ions responsible for carrying the current, not the water itself.

Both moisture, chloride and sulphate contamination influence electrical resistivity. At higher salt concentrations, moisture content has very little influence on electrical resistivity.
