Fault-free level measurement using guided wave radar technology

Traditional ultrasonic level sensors used in industry today can be largely unreliable due to interference by smoke, dust or extreme conditions.

ECEFast now provides a level measurement solution that uses radar to eliminate these problems that cause inaccurate readings.

Radar has proven to be the most effective level measurement technology – especially in difficult conditions. It works reliably, independently of environment gas, temperature or pressure, and results only depend on the Dielectric Constant K of the material being measured – whether its solid or liquid.

There are two major types:

  1. continuous wave "free air" radar where the instrument has an antenna to transmit and received microwave signals – basically like an ultrasonic instrument – and;
  2. guided wave radar, where the microwave signal and the reflected component is trapped by a conducting rod or wire which "guides" the signal close to the surface of the conductor.

Microwave pulses are generated by the instrument, transmitted down the wire, and partially reflected at the transition to the material being measured. The system is very effective in narrow spaces and accurate to within 10mm in 30 metres.

BM Technologie is an Italian company with a very strong presence in the water industry – and they have released a comprehensive range of CW (continuous wave) and GW (Guided Wave) radar level transmitters covering measurements to 70 metres with temperatures to 400C and pressures to 40bar. Most include HART communications and a graphical interface for visualisation of the pulse echoes. The display and programming systems allows the operator to assist the software to recognise false echoes, and to assist in optimised alignment or position of the transmitter.
