How to Measure an Actuator

Actuators come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to choosing your actuator, one of the most important aspects to consider is the stroke length of the actuator.

The stroke length is the total distance that the actuator will travel between fully retracted and extended.

Step 1: Find The Extended Length

While the actuator is fully extended, measure from the middle of the base mounting hole to the middle of the opposing mounting hole.

 

Step 2: Find The Retracted Length

While the actuator is fully retracted, measure from the middle of the base mounting hole to the middle of the opposing mounting hole.

 

Step 3: Stroke Length

Using the “Extended Length” and “Retracted Length” measurements, follow the formula below.

Stroke Length = ‘Extended Length’ – ‘Retracted Length’
