A company in South Gippsland, country Victoria is astonished at the service and attention they are receiving from a Brisbane based label company.
Pasta manufacturer Casalare Specialty Pasta is a “medium-sized” pasta maker according to their administration manager Nancy Hewitt. “There are the big automated manufacturers and the small makers of fresh pasta. We come somewhere between. We don't specify minimum quantities and we can manufacture up to container loads for export”.
Casalare produce four different labels, wheat free/gluten free pasta, certified organic gourmet pasta, certified organic bush pasta and certified organic ancient grain pasta. When rapid growth and high demand for the products forced expansion on their small packaging process they turned to insignia for help.
“We started as a small tourist business in the Gippsland area of Victoria in 1988 making fresh pasta, quickly diversified and grew into the dried organic and specialty pasta niche – learning everything by experience” Ms Hewitt says.
One of those experiences was recognizing that stocking a stack of bags of different sizes for different pastas was a problem. “We had a huge range and we needed a flexible approach to our packaging.”
“We were using pre printed labels with a small printer, setting up and managing our own database and sticking each label on by hand.”
A Melbourne graphic designer had made a stunning bucolic-looking background concept for the label, symbolising the country and gourmet aspect of the food. “We wanted to keep that look but make it slightly different for each of the ranges and have more flexibility in the packaging and application system”.
Casalare saw leading label manufacturer, insignia at Auspack last year and “we were impressed with their labelling systems. I thought they suited our needs and I was interested in the level of service insignia were offering with it” Ms Hewitt says.
Particularly Casalare wanted to keep the look and concept of the labels they had in order to cement the niche and gourmet look of the brand. insignia printed the 7-colour background labels and installed a Diagraph PA/5000LT printer applicator system allowing Casalare to over print and apply the labels automatically.
The machine overprints their variable information such as pasta type, nutritional information and barcodes on the pre-printed high quality template labels manufactured by insignia, directly on Casalare’s production line
This variable information printing allows Casalare to print labels as they require them in house, with the PA/5000LT. This is cost effective as there are fewer labels held in stock and they can easily make changes allowing for just in time manufacture, with no wasted labels.
“Now it all prints and applies, the operation is quicker and the end result looks more up market” Ms Hewitt says.
Casalare are happy with the “time saving and labor saving and money saving” outcome. Previously we would have had to have someone sticking every label on and it would have taken forever”.
But they are even happier with the level of service provided. “I would have to say we have been blown over by the after sales service. We haven't come across this before. The way they have handled it right from the beginning even though we are in country Victoria has been impressive.”
She was relieved insignia set up the whole new data base “there was a lot of work involved and they did it as part of the service.”
Ms Hewitt says she can see this is one of the reasons why insignia are so good “They get ongoing sales from their after sales service and they certainly will from us. I can see how that sort of approach will give them repeat business.”
