Land owners will be able to volunteer a site for further technical consideration.

The Australian Government has released a notice indicating its intention to consider opening a nationwide volunteer process for land owners to nominate land for Australia's radioactive waste management facility.

Nominations for a volunteer site are currently open to Aboriginal Land Councils in the Northern Territory under the National Radioactive Waste Management Act 2012. The Act also provides for a nationwide process.

If a nationwide process is opened, land owners in all states and territories will be able to volunteer a site for further technical consideration. A site will only be selected if it can fulfil strict environmental requirements.

Interested parties have until 10 November to comment on the proposal to consider a nationwide process to identify suitable sites. The Government will consider any comments provided before making a decision.
