An internet search proved worthwhile when Adelaide firm, Urban Glass and Aluminium, was preparing for a challenging glass canopy installation.

The company specialises in the fabrication, supply and installation of architectural aluminium and glazing products for commercial and residential construction application.

Shannon Royal, site supervisor, said the canopy they manufactured for the Baju Henley Square shopping mall and apartment complex comprised 30 panels, each weighing 500kg. They were 3m long, 1150mm wide and 17.5mm thick.

"Installation was a bit tricky because we had to glaze flat, which meant coming up from underneath," he said.

"The panels were too heavy to be handled manually in a safe manner, so I went on the Net to look at glass lifter options."

Shannon quickly came across Kennards Lift & Shift's new ride-on, self-propelled glass lifters. He said the 500kg capacity model, hired from Kennards Lift & Shift in Hindmarsh, was "a great little machine".

"I don't think we have had this sort of unit for hire in Adelaide before," Shannon said.

"It proved quick, easy and safe. We were able to do the job with just three guys – one operating the glass-lifter and the other two guiding the panels into position."

Kennards Lift & Shift also has smaller ride-on, self-propelled glass lifters, which can lift 350kg to a height of 2.7m, and are small and compact enough to fit through doorways.

Another recent addition to the glass lifter range is a heavy duty 12V Spider lifter with 635kg capacity.
