Orrcon Features in the Hills Homemaker Centre

Supplier: Orrcon Steel
03 December, 2007

Australian steel tube and pipe manufacturer, Orrcon is featured in Stage Three of the Hills Homemaker Centre, Australia’s largest Homemaker Centre, which opened for business in August 2007.

Orrcon products are used to support much of the centre’s external cladding and feature in an unusual architectural element.

Owned by Ticor Developments, the Hills Homemaker Centre is located north-west of Sydney in Castle Hill. Stage Three houses major tenants such as Domayne, Toys R Us, Officeworks and NSW’s first Clive Anthony’s store, along with another 40 stores in 25,000 square metres of space.

The original building – Stage One – consisting of approximately 28,000 square metres opened in 2002 and includes major tenants Harvey Norman, Oz Design and The Good Guys, along with approximately 35 retailers.

Steel fabricator, Proline Steel, based in Padstow on the outskirts of Sydney, carried out a large component of the structural steel work, with Proline’s
Eddie Younes saying, “While the job didn’t really present any difficulties we
depended on Orrcon to provide us with a range of RHS products in various sizes, gauges and lengths.”

Eddie said that the centre’s primary construction method was precast tilt-up concrete slab.  Much of the structural steel work that was fabricated and
installed contains Orrcon’s RHS products which were attached to the concrete to support the centre’s external panel cladding.

In all, Proline Steel fabricated installed over 300 structural steel members – some 70 tonnes - primarily made of RHS supplied by Orrcon.

“The centre also contains an unusual steel architectural feature consisting of eight free standing decorative posts, 13 metres high, installed right outside the main entrance.  Once again we used Orrcon manufactured and supplied RHS, galvanised to withstand the elements, and then painted a vivid purple.”

“It certainly looks distinctive and eye catching.”

“Proline Steel and Orrcon have a terrific relationship to the extent that we
almost always contact Orrcon first when we require steel hollow section products.  Their staff are always more than willing to help us out.”

Orrcon Application specialist, Lindon Flancbaum stated that “all the steel hollow sections products supplied by Orrcon to Proline Steel for the project were manufactured at our Brisbane structural mills and world class large pipe and tube mill in Wollongong which has just undergone a multi-million dollar upgrade.”

Whilst the majority of our RHS is hidden by the centre’s external cladding, it’s a great feeling knowing that Orrcon and its products have made a significant contribution to the successful construction of Stage Three of the Homemaker Centre at Castle Hill.

The RHS products supplied by Orrcon were manufactured to comply with Australian Standard AS1163 – Structural Steel Hollow Sections Grade C350L0.
