Wireless sensors for greenhouses

Advanced wireless network technology that transmits data directly from distributed low power sensors to central monitoring systems is a relatively new and exciting concept.

Wireless sensors can now be deployed almost anywhere at a far lower overall installation cost than wired sensors.

"Smart wireless sensors with standard interface to existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are becoming increasingly acceptable. It is time technicians and installers start gaining confidence in using the latest wireless sensing technology," according to ZigSense wireless sensing nodes product manager Motti Gill.

"A typical situation where wireless sensors would be more useful than wired sensors would be in monitoring temperature and %rh in greenhouses, cold storage or large refrigerators. Other parameters that can use wireless sensors would be soil moisture, pH, EC, water meter pulses, pump speed and general weather conditions.

"Installing wireless sensors is simple and flexible. It sure saves on installation time and cost. Data from wireless sensors can be made available to a local display, a computer or can be interfaced to an irrigation or greenhouse controller.

"Data can also be uploaded to an internet site," Gill explained.

"The advantage of using wireless sensors is translated into savings when calculating costs associated with installing wired sensors: The time it takes and costs associated with digging of cable trenches, or installing cable trays to the sensors. Low power sensors can operate for a very long time on a small battery without the need for an external power," according to Gill.
