David Lewis- "Thistlebrook", Bogey Creek Road, Moyhu in the King Valley- east of Wangarratta. David farms 168 hectares in partnership with his wife Susan and kids, Sarah, Ashley, Celina and Damien.
They run beef cattle, grow grapes and run a contracting operation in the local district.
David purchased a 22 Run AD100 Agrowdrill fitted with coulters, double shoot sowing boots and small seed box through Great Southern Motors, Albury in May 2009.
David chose this combination to allow him to be able to cut through trash with the coulters, deep band DAP under the seed zone and drop a clover and rye mixture through the SSB on top of the ground and rolled in with a Bison Roller in a one pass operation.
He also sows triticale and rye for foraging in the winter, cuts them for silage or hay in the Spring, then sows triticale for grain, sorghum for summer grazing and silage and renovating pastures with clover and ryes.
Over the last five years he has been promoting winter active rye and cereals for grazing to reduce feeding out as much fodder. This also allows him to see his surplus hay each year. In the first season, using the Agrowdrill, he successfully baled 1147 5*4 round bales of cereal clover and rye off a 60 acre paddock.
