Effective scheduling for manufacturing environments
In a manufacturing environment it is vital for production planners to have an overview of production schedules, both for production orders for which materials and resource capacity have been committed and for planned production orders that have been generated by Master Planning.
Traditionally the production planning overview was achieved by using a large wall-mounted ‘planning board’. Microsoft Dynamics AX provides a similar functionality with a Gantt chart presentation of production orders, and planned production orders that have been 'job-scheduled'.
Advanced production scheduling
In most manufacturing organisations, having a good visual presentation of production schedules is only part of the solution. It is very likely that soon after a schedule has been derived, which gives a balanced production load, an event will occur that requires re-scheduling. Such events could be; customer order amendments or cancellations, defective supplier delivery, or production resource breakdown etc.
The standard Gantt chart does allow re-scheduling by dragging and repositioning a task on the chart. However re-scheduling a task is the only re-scheduling option. Other options such as deleting or amending an order quantity, consolidating orders, or assignment to a different resource, requiring the user to take action in other parts of the system.
The Advanced Production Scheduling functionality for the Microsoft Dynamics AX Production module extends the Gantt table to provide a production planning ‘dashboard’ from which tasks scheduled for a work centre may be examined in detail, amended, sorted using a new sequence and re-scheduled. Scheduling has been enhanced to allow a work centre’s throughput to be varied from the route and setup time to be calculated based on the production order’s attributes and sequence.
Efficient and accurate re-scheduling
The easy to navigate screens allow for simple and efficient adjustments to the production schedules. Dynamics AX Advanced Production Scheduling is specially designed to enhance the existing functionality, making the whole re-scheduling process as efficient as possible ensuring schedules that are accurate and easy to maintain.
Key features of Advanced Production Scheduling for Microsoft Dynamics AX:
- Saves time by allowing the review and adjustment of production schedules from within the Gantt table.
- Ability to make adjustments to production orders from within the Gantt table.
- Additional sort sequences that may be applied from within the Gantt table to work-centre tasks for requiring scheduling.
- Route configurable throughput for alternative work centres.
- Scheduling calculated setup time dependant on the work centre’s preceding order’s attributes.
