Worldwide there is a lack of Port Reception Facilities for sludge oil and waste.
Discharging sludge oil and garbage to shore is often very expensive. In some developing countries, a small amount of money is sometimes paid for the sludge oil, but there is an environmental impact when using sludge oil as fuel.
Atlas incinerators operates without the installation of a Flue gas fan in the exhaust pipe (based upon a max counter pressure of 60 mm WG), saving the ship owner cost in terms of operation and maintenance of what has proven to be the most time consuming trouble point in an incinerator installation, due to imbalance of the impeller caused by soot from the hot exhaust gasses.
Sludge oil mixing tanks are delivered with a circulation pump and a mill pump for agitation and comminution of the tank contents. This makes it possible to burn oil sludge with up to 50% water content, without adding additional diesel oil to the burners or having to drain the tanks
Sludge oil with up to 50% water content: The IMO standard for sludge oil states that there is 20% water in the sludge oil. Ship Owners often have more water than this so it is important that the incinerator can also cope with higher water contents than the IMO standard

The Sludge burner is an Atlas Incinerators design of the air atomizing type with no moving parts, which via the sludge circulating pipe is equipped with a “self cleaning strainer” preventing any kind of blocking, hence no maintenance required and much reduced spare parts compared to rotary cup burners
