Australian Job Finding Kiosks

The Australian JobSearch project has been one of the most dramatic and successful government process modernisation projects ever undertaken.  It is considered an exemplar worldwide.  Our kiosks were an important enabler for the radical restructuring and improvement of employment service delivery.

Working with IBM, the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) were among the first to use kiosks for job search.

Neo developed a unit to their specification (the K15) in the early 1990s.  2,250 of those were rolled out in just 18 weeks.  Since then, the kiosks have been replaced by our Pathfinder model, and the number of units deployed has risen to around 3,000.

The introduction of the Pathfinder (shown here) allowed a major expansion of job seeker support services.  Job seekers now help themselves using a range of tools - including inputting their details to a bank of résumés or CVs.

DEWR’s own analysis found that the introduction of kiosks had an immediate, positive impact on service delivery costs and customer satisfaction.  The return on investment result was outstanding.

This project also illustrates our capability to manage a major project, both from a production capacity as well as a financial viewpoint.  We were subsequently commissioned to upgrade the entire network, which was carried out over a six month period with negligible disruption to the overall provision of services to job seekers.

Neo provides a unique service support structure - where we provide field replaceable spare subcomponents (printers and card readers), which have been designed to be easily installed by job centre staff.

This is an on-call service to over 1,000 locations throughout Australia. We despatch an urgent courier with a part upon notification of a component failure. It is then swapped over by a Job Centre staff member, and the faulty component is returned to us for repair and replacement in the spares pool.

We also provide a paper supply service where we despatch paper rolls to any site in Australia on demand.

As testament to the satisfaction of DEWR in the products and services provided by Neo, they now provide us with technical and consultative support in our worldwide government marketing initiatives.
