Iron is strong in compression and columns form ideal struts. We cast the round columns in grey iron whilst the open work columns were not intended for bearing heavy weight, so they are cast in ductile iron.
Square sections above the capital, used for fixing frieze brackets, are cast integral as part of the columns. Round columns are cast to any height within limits. Capitals are Corinthian or Doric, the shafts are plain or fluted, and the octagonal base may be varied in height to suit requirements. Lugs may be cast integral with the rest of the column. Holding columns to top beams and to the foundations can be achieved without nuts and bolts being seen.
