Bürkert's new Type 8681 Control Head — integrating pneumatic actuation, feedback, diagnostics, and fieldbus interface — has been engineered to assemble with all commercially available hygienic ball valves, butterfly valves, single-seat, double-seat, and mix-proof valve configurations.
Delivering the same control features as Bürkert's ELEMENT angle-seat, globe, and diaphragm valves, the 8681 head completes the automation portfolio solution for hygienic processes.
Designed for use in hygienic processes in the dairy, food/beverage, biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries, the 8681 head has a smooth and chemically resistant IP65/67 enclosure that is easily cleaned and suited to use in wash-down areas. These external protective features are matched by internal design elements including a contactless internal positioning system which negates internal wear, and manual overrides on the pneumatic pilots. Integrating ELEMENT control features, the 8681 is designed for longevity and functionality within the challenging sanitary process environment.
One feature embraced from the ELEMENT control valve range is super-bright LED position indication, designed to be visible from across the plant floor. The green, amber and red LEDs indicate valve switching position, or maintenance/fault requirement, with status/colour settings customised via DIP switch. This feature has been particularly utilised in dairy and food/beverage plants, where process machinery commonly spans a wide distance or stretches high above walkways. Using Bürkert's super-bright LED status indication, on the 8681 or ELEMENT valves, operators can effortlessly see the switching or maintenance status in an instant.
The 8681 control head controls strokes up to 85mm with three-positions, with 200 l/min pneumatic air for each pilot valve, and is certified for explosive environments, with ATEX Cat. 3, Zone 2/22. Other features of the 8681 head include automatic configuration ‘teach-in' software, that auto-commissions the control head, the ability to adjust chamber switching speed individually in both directions of movement, and the inclusion of a non-return valve to prevent faulty switching due to back-pressure.
Compared with actuation by pilot valves in a central switch cabinet, control heads mounted directly to the actuator offer clear advantage in planning, installation, start-up and maintenance, due to the significant reduction of the required connections. Switching times and consumption of control air are consequently minimised by the extremely short distance between pilot valve in the control head and the pneumatic actuator. The decentralised automation concept allows a clearly structured and easy-to-monitor system design, which increases operational reliability.
