The most spectacular valleys can be found in the Everest Region, in particular the Gokyo and Khumbu Valleys.
We spend the first 2 days in Nepal's capital city Kathmandu, situated in a valley jam-packed of historic sites, ancient temples, golden pagodas and intriguing townships. Afterwards we fly to Lukla and follow tracks from Dudh Kosi Valley to Namche Bazaar, trekking our way to Gokyo Valley. Our journey to Everest explores Sherpa villages, visits monasteries, seeks wildlife and uncovers vivid mountain landscape.
The Gokyo trail ascends up the hillside to a bypass at Mong La, and sinks steeply back down to the banks of the Dudh Koshi. We pass through rhododendron and oak forests, now frozen waterfalls and pine forests before breaking out above the tree line which is one of the best segments of any trail in Everest. The trail ascends gradually and we enjoy a series of short trekking days to ensure proper acclimatisation.
In the last treks up to Gokyo we will pass the teahouses at Pangkha and the terminal moraine of the large, renowned, Ngozumpa Glacier. We trek past two more lakes to reach the teahouses of Gokyo and we see the Cho Oyu Peak; at 8153 meters (the eight highest peaks on earth) it dominates the Gokyo Valley. We also take the rocky track to stopover at Everest Base Camp ahead of returning to Lukla, through the magnificent Thyangboche Monastery.
