Between 1990 and 1998 Australia's production of greenhouse gasses increased from 389.8 million tonnes (1990) to 455.9 million tonnes (1998) of CO2 equivalent.
This equates to a 16.9% jump in greenhouse gas production over and above 1990 levels, exceeding the written commitment Australia made to keep its emissions down to 8% above 1990 levels.
Although the details of the «Kyoto Protocol» - of which Australia is a signatory - are yet to be ironed out, it's starting to look like the Australian government is going to have egg on its face.

Better nutrition reduces methane production
Firstly - 15.4% of Australia's green house gases are attributable to methane production by livestock, which can be reduced substantially (by up to 75%) simply by feeding the animals a nutritionally balanced diet.
Lucerne has been known for eons as the King of Fodders. This is no accident because lucerne contains a well balanced nutritional profile of protein, energy, minerals, vitamins and fibre which produces a 'clean green', high impact, all-in-one feed package for animals.
Because it is so easily digested and nutritious, animals are able to extract virtually all of the goodness of lucerne, leaving little waste including the production of methane gas.
Methane is considered to be one of the worst of the greenhouse gasses producing 21 times more damage to our atmosphere than does Carbon Dioxide, and the vast majority of methane produced comes from animals poorly digesting their food.
Converting carbon dioxide into carbon
Secondly - lucerne grows profusely when intensively farmed. It generates biomass at an estimated rate of 100-150 tonnes per hectare per year. It is arguable that lucerne is the
irrigation crop equivalent of trees - only much more "instant". It takes only one to two years for a lucerne plant to reach maximum productivity whereas trees take as much as twenty years.
This actively growing lucerne biomass sucks large amounts of Carbon Dioxide (the biggest greenhouse gas in tonnage terms) out of the atmosphere.
Thirdly - lucerne is like an iceberg. With a giant 15 metre long tap root and a profuse root system in the top 60 centimetres of soil it is depositing (sequestering) substantial amounts of carbon into a large volume of soil - not just the top few centimetres - like most other crops.
In spite of the relatively small size of the lucerne plant growing above the surface - like an iceberg - there is much more below the surface.
In fact it resembles a tree in terms of the amount of carbon it can deposit over time. For this reason it has great potential to convert Carbon Dioxide into sequestered carbon.
Reducing nitrous oxides
Fourthly - lucerne is a perennial crop. It only needs to be planted every five years or so. This means that the soil remains undisturbed for long periods of time. Every time old crop stubbles are burnt they release significant quantities of Nitrous Oxide gas.
Like Methane, Nitrous Oxide is also much nastier than Carbon Dioxide. Because an intensive lucerne farming system results in approximately 80% less stubble burning, it results in significant reductions in Nitrous Oxide per hectare.
Fifthly - Lucerne is a legume. In other words it actually creates natural nitrogen fertiliser which it leaves in the ground for the next (rotation) crop to use.
This means there is less need for additional nitrogen fertiliser and less production of Nitrous Oxide, resulting from the use of manufactured nitrogen fertilisers.

Lastly - because of Fodder King's technology and marketing, intensive lucerne production at mass scale is now profitable and large world markets mean that an industry as big as rice or cotton could arise, but without any of their nasty environmental side effects.
And with that scale comes the opportunity to substantially reduce greenhouse gasses, particularly the huge quantities of methane currently generated by livestock eating poorer quality feed.
