COGITA's Epicor ERP client since 2003, Giltrap Engineering, has been a corner stone employer in the rural heartland town of Otorohanga (right of centre North Island New Zealand) seemingly forever. Business growth at Giltrap has meant a sparking new building.
Giltraps headquarters are located on a 2.5 hectare site beside SH3 on the northern approaches to the town.
Business founder Wilfred Giltrap began designing and building farm machinery in 1959 in his home workshop on the farm. After a severe fire, he purchased and moved to the present site in 1969 in town.
The business changed hands in 2001 and is now owned by Craig and Belinda Mulgrew, Wilfred's son-in-law and daughter who shortly after brought in the new Epicor ERP software to support their growth ambitions.
The large site has tended to grow haphazardly over the years leading to inefficiencies as the business grew larger. This prompted the owners to embark on a major reorganisation and expansion of the manufacturing facilities through 2008 and 2009.
"We are very positive about the future and we're ready to take advantage of the better economic times after 2009. A lull in sales last year gave us the opportunity to carry out the improvements without interrupting production too much," Craig says.
Improvements include an addition of nearly 2,500m² manufacturing space enabling the streamlining of all processes from inwards goods to finished product on the truck. Better factory flows, robotic welding processes and a new sandblasting facility have seen immediate productivity gains of more than 30%.
More business growth gains are expected this year as Giltrap Engineering embarks on a Lean Manufacturing programme for 2010 to maximise the business potential from the considerable investment in the new facility.
