The leading cause of death of one to four-year-old children in Queensland, Australia is drowning.
In order to reduce the number children deaths due to drowning, the Queensland Government has introduced a variety of new laws to make pools safer. Among the new laws is a requirement that every pool in the State be inspected by a registered pool safety inspector.
As with most field inspections these have usually been conducted using a hand held camera, a clipboard and a paper checklists with all the items that need to be checked. In consultation with pool inspectors, inspection software companies have worked with pool inspectors to automate the process. The checklist has been converted to an electronic format viewable on a mobile device loaded with the inspection software. While many inspectors have been using their Ipads or Iphones, a lot have seen the benefits of a PDA. The PDAs allow inspectors to capture and annotate photographs which they can later attach to a report.
