What happens when more than 2700 exhibitors and 175,000 visitors in the packaging and processing sector come together in one place? We sent our experts along to interpack 2014 to find out.
interpack only comes around once every three years, but when it does, it reaffirms its place as the world's most important trade fair for the packaging and processing sector. And this year was no exception. Matthews was among the 66 per cent visitors from all over the world who descended upon Düsseldorf, Germany, to find out what the industry has in store in terms of "innovations and trends".
And if this year's interpack is any indicator, efficiency is the hot topic. How to drive better productivity than ever. How to be faster. How to have a smaller footprint. How to get real-time feedback. And how all this can impact the total cost of ownership.
Efficiency was the overriding theme for machinery as well as packaging material use, quality and safety, to guarantee flawless, counterfeit-proof products.
Here's a quick look back on interpack 2014, and the things you need to know:
1. Use equipment to get a jump on your competitors.
Some businesses are only now realising the power of packaging equipment in giving them a competitive advantage. Choose equipment that will help you drive speed and productivity throughout your production line, and you will get ahead of your competitors.
2. Capital is only one part of the equation.
When it comes to choosing new equipment, manufacturers should be focused on the total cost of ownership, or TCO, not just the initial investment. By choosing equipment with a proven low TCO, you can enjoy a better return on investment in the long run. We've talked about this before and the innovations displayed at interpack proved it: choose the right technologies to benefit from real productivity gains.
3. Get real-time feedback.
It naturally follows from above that manufacturers are realising the advantages of focusing on overall equipment effectiveness, or OEE. (See here for a quick run down on what OEE is.) At interpack 2014, there was a huge emphasis on having access to OEE data inline. This enables manufacturers to see precisely when and where the equipment is failing, or is not up to standard, and fix it before it impacts the bottom line.
