When Toowoomba's Peak Crossing pedestrian bridge was turned into a twisted wreck by the devastating floods of 2013, construction company Davbridge Construction knew precisely who to call - and Kenro quickly responded.
When the swollen, unrelenting torrent brought by Cyclone Oswald hit the Peak Crossing footbridge in the summer of 2013, the steel structure bent and buckled out of shape.
This pedestrian bridge was used by schoolkids attending the adjacent Peak Crossing State School, so the Queensland Reconstruction Authority made this project a priority.
First things first, a temporary bridge was put in place to ensure the children could cross in safety, and approval to rebuild the bridge was given a year after the washout.
It was originally thought that the replacement crossing would take around 18 weeks to build, however thanks largely to Kenro manufacturing and supplying the components in a timely manner, the new bridge was delivered weeks ahead of schedule.
As Davbridge's Senior Site Supervisor explains:
"We choose Kenro because of their great track record and their very competitive price - and they also came through on quality and service. Everything went so smoothly, we completed the footbridge way ahead of time."
The bridge was simply beautiful and beautifully simple.
Designed in an ingenious modular style by AECOM, it was built high above the new flood mark.
With sturdy steel girders supporting a concrete slab, it is a very strong construction with stunning contemporary looks.
To ensure everyone was on the same page, Kenro's engineers met with Davbridge right from the onset to get a first hand feel of what was required.
As a result the bridge "practically fell together."
An important design feature was that Kenro’s steel handrails and balustrades are all individually replaceable - this meant that if any one section were damaged, the ensuing problem would be easy to fix.
Headstocks and girders were also supplied.
Kenro manufactured, fabricated and galvanised the metal products and then organised delivery on site within budget, tolerance and - as is Kenro's want - on time.
Needless to say, the Davbridge Estimator in charge of the project was impressed.
"Davbridge asked 5 or 6 other companies to tender for this project, and quite apart from the price, Kenro were the standouts...proactive and professional. Nothing was a problem and everything worked out extremely well."
