Reliable and cost-effective materials handling has played an important role in making P&O Cold Logistics one of Australia’s leading providers of third-party cold storage and distribution.
Providing a comprehensive range of logistics services to many of the country’s largest retailers and food manufacturers, P&O Cold Logistics 3 operates close to 1,000,000 m of freezer and chiller space in Australia, providing cold storage for over 150,000 pallets.
In Melbourne, the company operates two separate distribution centres at Laverton, one dedicated to Woolworths, the other for multiple clients of various sizes.
Completed just four years ago, the Woolworths DC supports all of the retailer’s stores – about 180 outlets – throughout Victoria, supplying many on a daily basis.
The DC has a storage capacity of around 20,000 pallets in chillers and freezers.
The materials handling systems include automated pallet destacking, handling, storage and retrieval, integrated pick-to-belt order picking modules, high speed conveyor sortation and wireless data transfer for real-time operations.
Supporting the order fulfillment operation and constantly feeding the automated material handling systems is a fleet of more than 50 Linde lift trucks, backed by an on-site, Linde factory- trained technician.
